Überfremdung

The German term “Überfremdung” is being used by racists and nationalists to describe a supposed increase of foreign influences in society. The term means “over-foreignisation”. Underlying this concept is an understanding of German culture as unitary, homogenous and static which can be negatively influenced through outside factors. In 1993, “Überfremdung” was elected non-word of the year.
