Resettler from East Germany

Resettlers from East Germany were citizens of the GDR who migrated from the East Germany to West Germany. Between the founding of the GDR in 1949 and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, more than three million resettlers moved from the GDR to the FRG. The construction of the Berlin Wall made it significantly more difficult East Germans to leave the GDR. Many East Germans migrated to West Germany for political reasons, others for economic reasons due to the considerably better economic situation in West Germany.
