Heuss-Turks

Prior to the labour recruitment agreement with Turkey in 1961, Federal president Theodor Heuss invited vocational school graduates from Turkey to work in Germany, known as “Heuss-Turks”, during a state visit to Ankara. In 1958, around 150 vocational school graduates followed his invitation and in order to work or study in West Germany, many of them started as apprentices at the Ford factories in Cologne.
