European route 5 / (“guest worker” route)

The former European route 5 (E5) is a transit route, running from Munich to Istanbul. Every holiday period, millions of labour migrants used this route to travel from Germany to their countries of origin Turkey, Greece or the Yugoslavian Republics. During holiday periods, the route was known for its intense traffic and frequent accidents. Thus, the route has also been referred to as “death route”, “Autoput” or “guest worker route”.
