Since the 1980s, the German term “Asylant” (lit. asylee) has been used as a defamatory and pejorative for refugees or people who were perceived to be refugees. The term is being used as independently from a person’s actual asylum status as a racist insult. Due to its discriminatory use, the term ceased to be used in official language. Refugees who apply for asylum are referred to as asylum seekers, people whose asylum application was accepted are referred to as recognised refugees.
